For the fifth year, Franklin Avenue Baptist Church (FABC) held its annual Holistic Health Ministry Conference on October 24, 2020, concentrating this year on Mental Health. Mental illness may be more common than many people realize. According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), “Mental Illness is a medical condition that affects a person’s thinking, feeling, or mood. Such conditions may affect someone’s ability to relate to others and function each day. Nola.com | Tulane report finds deep racial disparities for New Orleans start-up businesses

A new study from Tulane University finds deep disparities in the opportunities available to non-white entrepreneurs trying to start businesses in the greater New Orleans area.

The annual survey of New Orleans’ start-up businesses by Tulane’s A.B. Freeman School of Business, published on Monday, found that firms owned by Black, Indigenous and People of Color (BIPOC) entrepreneurs are only half as likely as white-owned firms to receive debt financing via traditional bank loans.

They also receive equity investments less than half as often in the earliest round, the report found. Read more.

New Orleans Business Alliance and Mayor’s Office to Launch $350,000 Pilot Program to Support Resiliency of Local Businesses and Commercial Corridors

NEW ORLEANS – The City of New Orleans and the New Orleans Business Alliance (NOLABA) are launching a $350,000 pilot program to support businesses and commercial corridors within the following seven neighborhoods identified as part of the NOLABA Strategic Neighborhood Development (SND) Strategy: New Orleans East, Lower 9, Hollygrove, Gert Town, Gentilly, Treme, and Algiers. These communities have experienced decades of disinvestment, leaving surrounding businesses more vulnerable to economic and environmental disasters, such as the current COVID-19 pandemic. Nola.com | Benson Capital Partners, venture fund backed by Gayle Benson, to invest $53M

Benson Capital Partners, a New Orleans-based venture capital firm backed by New Orleans Saints and Pelicans owner Gayle Benson, said Thursday it had raised more than $50 million to pursue startup investments.

The firm, which was quietly launched last year, aims to find and invest in Gulf Coast companies that are fast-growing but hemmed in by a lack of funding. Read more.
