Developer Proposes Resort for Former Frenchman’s Wharf Property

Tuesday, January 28, 2020. Representatives of developer White Star Commercial. LLC hosted a meeting at Kipp Morial School at 7701 Grant St., to share plans for the former Frenchman’s Wharf property near I-10 and Morrison Road.

While the company wants to build a gated, family-friendly resort with tennis, putt-putt golf and water amusement activities on the site, which includes a 19-acre lake for fishing, residents who live near the site were not impressed, and expressed concerns about crime that may be attracted by the site.

J. Walter Lewis, President of White Star Commercial, guided the audience through several photos of the proposed development, which would be constructed within 24 months, hold 450 hotel units and would cost $20 – $25 million. Key points from the meeting are listed below:

  • Priority would be placed on hiring minority firms for development of the property and hiring minority employees for working on the completed property.
  • The property would contain several areas open to the public, including retail space, entertainment space which could be used for banquets or meetings, a restaurant, sports bar and an arcade.
  • The property would not contain apartments.
